Y6 WW2 Enrichment experience

Y6 WW2 Enrichment experience
Leonie Saddleton

On Friday 30 January 2026, Year 6 were instantly transported back to the days of The Blitz as a genuine air‑raid siren echoed through the classroom. The visiting Air Raid Warden introduced their vital role during the war before signing up the pupils as trainee wardens and equipping them with their own black warden’s helmets.

The children then took part in a series of engaging, hands‑on activities. They used an authentic WW2 stirrup pump to put out pretend fires, safely moved a model incendiary bomb with a bomb scoop and hoe, and even practised extinguishing one using the traditional sandbag method.

Pupils also learned WW2‑style first aid, following genuine instructions from the time to bandage their partners using triangular bandages. They went on to practise techniques for moving an immobile person, including the opportunity to handle real British Army stretchers.
