Y4 Roman Experience

Y4 Roman Experience
Leonie Saddleton

On Monday 26 January, Year 4 enjoyed an exciting and immersive Roman workshop, beginning with a visit from a Roman Centurion in full armour. Pupils learned about the equipment he carried and watched demonstrations of how each item would have been used in Roman times.  One of the highlights of the day was the Battle Formations and Tactics session, where pupils used their own sword and shield to practise the famous Roman battle formations that helped the Romans conquer lands far and wide.

Pupils then became archaeologists for the morning, sifting through sand to uncover real artefacts. Items from the Roman, Anglo‑Saxon and Viking periods sparked plenty of curiosity and discussion as pupils investigated their discoveries. The workshop continued with traditional Roman board games, handmade from wood and designed to replicate those played around 2,000 years ago.

To finish, pupils stepped into the role of Roman scribes. Using authentic Egyptian papyrus, reed pens and ink, they tried writing in Latin and experienced the tools used by scribes in ancient times.

It was a fantastic day of hands‑on learning that brought Roman history to life for our Year 4 pupils.
